SUMMARY: When a virus isn't just a virus... "Many of the Old World species and some New World species are brood parasites, laying their eggs in the nests of other birds." - Wikipedia: Cuckoo (sga_flashfic Sickness Challenge)
They were nightmares that weren't nightmares; disjointed flashes of blood-drenched corridors, loved ones he'd never seen before ripped apart from the inside and rebuilt... and the screams. Every time they changed the drugs and Carson pulled him out, pulled him back from someone else's dreams, the screams were still all he could hear.
Dying, you're dying. Why won't you listen? But even if Rodney could have spoken, no one would have understood. Couldn't see that he was sick because he was the only one that was healthy. The only one fighting back.
"--it's just a fever--"
Yes! Yes! In the fever, look--, see what he had that they didn't; antibodies, resistance, but Carson was still talking, moving away. Rodney tried to get control back, enough to do something, anything, to get Carson's attention.
"--get some rest. We've given you some--"
No, no, no! Look! See! There! He'd twitched his fingers. Notice, someone notice, before they took over again, took control and sent him back to dreams, nightmares, memories of a thousand other hosts that hadn't gone quietly into the darkness. He had to warn them, had to let them know--
But Carson just patted his arm awkwardly and said, "It'll all be over soon."
And somewhere, deep inside, he heard them answer, Yes.
